Screenwriting (Part Time) $250
PART TIME: 15 hrs -6 Weeks (6 x 2.5 hrs, evenings)
Hollywood has veered away from traditional storytelling. Most of what we see now are complex stories, elaborate environments and simple characters - making room for CGI and SFX to tell the story for them. Fortunately, independent cinema is primarily comprised of films with complex characters and simple stories - this is what is so appealing to the low-no budget filmmaker. With so many great independent films coming out, how do you find a story that is compelling and financially viable in the low-no budget realm?
This course is designed to introduce screenwriting principals and to gain an understanding of how ideas can be developed for the no-budget filmmaker. The course includes an introduction to free screenwriting software, the formatting necessary to develop and produce your script, the basics of story structure, creating character with action and dialogue. You will learn how to take each step from outline, to treatment, to full-length script. Register online here.

With the introduction of prosumer equipment, the ability to make a film has been literally opened up to anyone with a camera. However, producing a film not only involves creative storytelling and interesting visual content - it requires good business sense and organization. The objective of the No-Budget Filmmaking course is to explore the possibilities, hurdles and logistics in making a narrative production with limited resources. The course analyzes the step by step process of script analysis, pre-production, casting and crew recruitment, on set production, and post production. We also focus on the business end of the production to ensure that your product won't hit any legal snags when it comes time to license it for broadcast or distribution.
Filmmaking is a process like any other, a beginning (the story) and an end (broadcast or theatrical release). Our course is designed to prepare students for the steps necessary to bridge these two end points and to provide the tools and resources to ensure they have the working knowledge and competence to achieve all they can in this fascinating industry. As every production is unique, so are the logistical problems that arise. All of our instructors have successfully produced, directed, or been key personnel on low-no budget productions and are here to help give you a base knowledge to work around those problems. "You know what would make a great documentary?..." How many
times have we said that? Now is your chance to tell that story. The aim
of this course is to analyze, deconstruct, create and rebuild documentary
film in order to provide the student with the necessary tools to make
his or her own documentary. We will also explore the producer's role,
funding agents and pre-licensing with broadcasters. , this course offers
a study program designed to perfect the participants' ability to find
a subject, develop it, and tell a story in an effective and interesting
manner, exploring all forms of media.
Documentary is one form of storytelling that is constantly evolving. Like much of film and television, the rules are simply guidelines and can be stepped over, replaced, or completely ignored. In recent years documentary has become wildly popular because of this reinvention and the introduction and acceptance of 'reality' programming. We have now become accustom to the 'rough' production look of consumer and prosumer gear and instead rate the film based on content. As amazing as your footage and content may be, many independent documentaries have been shelved because proper contracts and consent forms were not used. We will guide you through step by step on how to protect yourself, your film, and your subjects to ensure you have the knowledge and resources to create a marketable product. Register online here.

Victoria IndieCine
Do you need a certificate or diploma film school program to make films? No! (read more) IndieCine bridges the gap between long/ expensive film programs and 1-2 day courses. IndieCine offers a creative and practical approach to independent and no-budget filmmaking. Tailored for individuals who are not interested in climbing the ranks on big-budget features, want to explore their creativity through film, and are not in a position professionally or financially to attend formal training facilities. We strip away the fluff from 'film school' and have developed condensed, intensive courses that address the artistry and business of filmmaking - ensuring that participants have a firm understanding of the industry, giving them the best chance to find a venue for their work.
Traditional Film School Truths
Traditional Film School often does not work for creative minded individuals nor is it a necessity to make a film or enter the industry - many times, it doesn't even help! Several successful filmmakers have not attended film school, such as Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino, Richard Linklater & Spike Jonze. Others have started a film program and dropped out soon after, like Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smith. In private film schools, it often seems it is creative and artistic individuals who are the ones who do not receive the training, or skills necessary to create their own marketable product or find a venue for their efforts.
If somebody simply wants to work on a film set, they could very easily
acquire 3 short 1-2 day training programs (WHMIS, Traffic Control and
Set Etiquette) then show up at a production office with a resume. Creative
and artistic thinkers need to express themselves, and working as a production
assistant is not a rewarding avenue for them to pursue - yet this is essentially
what many private film schools are training students for. Many creative individuals
fail in the film school environment because the structure is inherently
very industrial - set up for the left brain thinkers. Educational Instructors
are often very analytical and rational - where, in my experience, private
film school students tend to lean heavily on the creative, intuitive and
subjective side.
This is why IndieCine was created. There are several ways to create your
own jobs, make films, and be creative without the industrialized hierarchy
of traditional film and television production. The instructors of our
courses have done this and are continuing to do it. They will show you
how they did it and help you move forward with your ideas.
